Award Document for the U-Boat Badge

to a Knight's Cross winner.

Original award document for the U-Boat badge dated 7 Jan 1943

and with Dönitz facsimile signature to Matrosengefreiten

Siegmund Matheja. Matheja later transferred to the Army and served as an

Unteroffizier with Pz. Haub. Abt./ Führergrenadier Division part of Panzerkorps

Grossdeutschland and was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 6 May 1945.

Matheja may be seen in postwar uniform wearing both the U-Boat Badge and

Ritterkreuz.

Document has the usual punch holes for a document folder , has been folded

and has tape reinforcement to the reverse of two corners. Nevertheless an

extremely rare document for the U-Boat Badge to an Army Ritterkreuzträger !!

Commander of U-47 and holder of the Knights Cross with Oakleaves

Under Prien's command U-47 sank over 30 allied ships totalling around 200,000 GRT. His most famous

success was of course the sinking of the battleship Royal Oak at the Fleet anchorage in Scapa Flow

and subsequent successful escape. An extremely rare period signature. Both card and signature in excellent

A pair of documents comprising the U-Boat Badge award document and an Iron Cross Second

Class award document to Maschinenobergefreiter Josef Schumacher of U-593

Both have the desirable Dönitz signatures

U-593 was a famous boat, with 9 merchant ships sunk in addition to 4 warships. Very few

boats successfully sank enemy warships. U-593 was commander by Knight's Cross

winner Kapitänleutnant Gerd Kelbling.

A pair of documents comprising the U-Boat Badge award document issued June 1944

with facsimile Rösing signature and scarce document for the U-Boat Clasp in Bronze

signed by Korvettenkapitän Kuhnke, commander of 33 U-Flotille.

A photo of the recipient, Mechanikersgefreiten Heinz Justenhoven is included.

ascinating letter to the relative of a U-Boat sailor who had been asking about his

family member. Written by Knight's Cross winner Ernst Kals in his capacity

as commander of 2 Unterseebootsflotille, it re-assures the recipient of the letter

of the sailor's wellbeing, that he is currently at sea and that it is not known

exactly when the boat will return to base but that he shouldn't worry.

The letter is headed "freudige Mitteilung" (Happy News)

Award Document set for U-195

A superb document set to a crew member of U-195, a Type IXD1 which served in the far east.

As well as refuelling the famous Monsun boats, U-195 carried supplies for the base in Penang

and carried V2 rocket components being traded to the Japanese. At the end of the war, she was

taken over by the Japanese and renamed the I-506. She eventually fell into British hands after

the Japanese surrender and was scuttled in August 1945.
